Balcony Repair
July 2019 - Rusted railings, water dripping into the storage area below, and the unsettling feeling of gravel under my feet as I walk out on the balcony. In true Me fashion, time to tear it all out and start fresh.
I’m no expert, but it probably should have been harder to break that.
You can see the top of the drip edge (white aluminum) along the side. Water had been hitting that and running down under the rubber surface. No wonder I had water leaking into the storage underneath.
Respirator - activate.
Well that explains the feeling of gravel under my feet. The whole thing is waterlogged, and I can’t even tell what the mushy stuff on top once was.
Rubber surface completely removed. Not pretty underneath.
Mercifully, the decking itself survived all the water mostly unscathed. Now I just need to get rid of all that tar and gravel.
My yearly quota of carcinogens.
Mostly cleaned up,
Drip edge removed. Packing up for the night.
Did you know that new drip edge is kinda expensive? Because I did not know that.
IS THIS RIGHT?! AM I DOING THIS RIGHT!?!?
Insulation being fitted and screwed into place. Take that, insulation.
Seams all taped up, railing posts sealed. The rubber goes on tomorrow.
Please dont rain please dont rain please dont rain…
Gluing the EPDM rubber surface on top.
Water tight!
Installing this railing is a pain in the ol’ booter, but it sure looks nice.
I couldn’t let Vally out on the balcony without a railing, so she guarded the materials for me.
Last mile!
Finish line.
Fin.
